Sometimes eyes communicate more clearly someone’s attitude toward a person, an action or a thing, than words. We can say if people like what they see or not by the way they look at others. To give someone a black look means to show disapproval or disgust. What are the things that make you look this way? Sure, I’d prefer not to have any of such things in my life. But sometimes we come to see them. I would give a black look to those who abuse someone who is weaker, I would also give a black look to people who make others take a wrong path in their life. It is easy and nice to meet only good people and to see only pleasant things but because we live in a sinful world, we see such disagreeable pictures that we cannot give them any other looks than black ones. God, Himself, disapproves sin and all those who commit it. So if we want to please, our Creator, and receive answers to our prayers, we should communicate our disapproval toward sin, both using words and looks.
“You must turn away from evil and do good; you must strive for peace with all your heart. For the Lord watches over the righteous and listens to their prayers; but He opposes those who do evil.” 1 Peter 3:11-12.
The Bible also teaches us that God forgives those who repen
t of their evil deeds and that He forgets all their sins.
Another side of the coin, of course, is whom we shouldn’t give a black look. Nowadays, we see a lot of poor people, people with different disabilities or “defects”, people of lower status or rank and we are tempted to give them this black look. But we must never do this. We should keep in mind one thing, God is our Creator, God gives people riches or poverty. How should we look at them, then? In Proverbs 15:30 we are told: “Bright eyes give joy to the heart.” So, for these categories, and all the other people, we have to have a special look: bright eyes, that would bring joy to their hearts; a smiling face that would cheer them up.
Just make sure you give the proper look to everyone and everything!
