Blessing in disguise – this idiom contains the meaning in itself. Blessing is something good that is granted to us by God, a gift from heaven, but which is not seen at first because of the way or the circumstances it comes through.
In the Bible we have a story of a young man. He was his father’s favorite son, but his brothers hated him because he was telling to their father all bad things they were doing. Also they hated the fact that Joseph was loved more than they were. So one day while they were in the fields taking care of the sheep and saw Joseph coming, they decided to kill him. They threw him into a deep pit. But then, when they saw some tradesmen coming, they changed their plan and sold Joseph into slavery. Can you imagine how Joseph felt what he went through and how discouraged and devastated he must have been? Could he have any hopes or dreams of getting out of this dead end? Was there any way out? Yes! God was with Joseph even in those moments and He made Joseph the second man after the Pharaoh, its like being made Prime Minister after being a sweeper. Joseph was also able to save all the people from his nation from the famine that started in that land. This difficulty in his life was a blessing in disguise.
I think that in our lives we often have these blessing-in-disguise situations. The question is: do we see them, do we acknowledge them? May be this is a small blessing like missing a crowded bus and the next minute catching an empty one, or it may be one that can change your entire life, like in Joseph’s situation. The important thing is to be able to detect these blessings and thank God for them. I am sure you could share a story like this and I invite you to do so.
