This is one of the best ways to experience and grow in interpreting. It is because you have only one person whom you need to interpret and not a whole audience that can make you very nervous. Still, even though it is just you, the speaker and the listener, as a professional interpreter you need to do your job the best. For having the best result there are a few things you need to know.
1. While the discussion is between the speaker and the listener you do not have the right to disturb by not waiting the speaker to finish the whole idea.
2. Also, remember you need to be invisible. You are the voice and just the voice, but without you there will be no communication between the speaker and the listener, so have that in mind.
3. If the speaker and the listener are talking about a private subject, try to be as specific as possible in your translation. Also try to make the discussion comfortable for both, the speaker and the listener. After the talk between themselves end, you need to forget everything you heard about the personal life of one of them. Remember one or both of them have just opened their hearts and you need to give them the right of trusting you.
4. Sometimes the person you are interpreting for may not know all the “big terms”, so try to adjust your message according to the level the person understands it. You purpose is not to impress, but to express the message.
5. Be human. If one of them, either the speaker or listener starts crying because they are talking of deep subjects, give a moment to calm down and respect the emotions of the person.
6. If the listener does not know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, take a moment and share with him/her the message of life, the message that can set all of us free!
